Firearms Permits and Registration

On February 18, 2019, The New Jersey State Police Firearms Investigation Unit announced the statewide activation of the Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS).  The activation of FARS will allow firearms applications to be created and submitted online.

Application Procedure

The new online application is APPLICANT DRIVEN. If the applicant makes a mistake while applying, they simply can RE-APPLY. The applicant should understand that all application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. The applicant MUST utilize the correct ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) number (NJ0110200) for the Ewing Police Department. 

 

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE STEPS BEFORE CLICKING THE WEBSITE IN STEP 1.  NOT FOLLOWING ALL OF THE DIRECTIONS AS OUTLINED MAY DELAY THE ENTIRE PROCESS. 

 

NOTE: 

Upon completing the online application, all applicants MUST submit an online payment to the Ewing Police Department by clicking here for their permits and, if applicable, the Firearms ID card. Permits are $25.00 each and Firearms ID Card is $50.00  Use the application confirmation number.  SEE STEP 4 FOR MORE INFORMATION 

 

Step 1:  READ ALL STEPS FIRST

 

Step 2:  When you log on, you must enter the Ewing Police Department’s ORI #: NJ0110200.  Applicants using this ORI # MUST live in Ewing, New Jersey. If you're unsure which town to apply for, please contact the Ewing Tax Assessor's Office to verify your residency, at 609-883-2900 ext x7661.

 

Step 3:  Complete the online application.  You may complete the application using a smart phone, mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer.  Be sure to check all relevant boxes for the items you are applying for.  When deciding how many permits you would like to get, remember the following:

 

ONE permit is required for each handgun you wish to purchase (each permit is $25.00)

  • First time gun buyers must get a Firearms Purchaser ID Card
  • You can purchase one (1) handgun in a 30-day period
  • Permits are good for up to 180 days (with renewal after 90 days)
  • If you decide you want another handgun permit and you didn't initially get more than one, you will need to apply again

 

Step 4: Payments must be made before your permit application will be processed.

Upon completing the online application, all applicants MUST submit an online payment to the Ewing Police Department by clicking here for their permits and, if applicable, the Firearms ID card.  Use the application confirmation number.  You can also follow the below link to make an online payment. 

Remember, enter the application confirmation number in the payment reference field when completing the payment process.

For fees and instructions concerning payment, see details below.  Applications will NOT be processed until all applicable fees are paid.

 

Step 5:  A representative of the Ewing Police Department will contact you with the results of your application.  You will also be contacted when your permits and relevant paperwork is ready for pick-up. 

IF WE DON'T RECEIVE YOUR FINGERPRINTS WITHIN 90 DAYS, YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE WITHDRAWN AND YOU WILL HAVE TO REAPPLY.

 

 

Application Guidelines

 

You will be receiving automated email updates throughout the online process.

Please advise your references that the FARS system will email them the reference questions to be answered.  Your references can complete the questions using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop, or desktop computer.  Please advise them to complete the questions immediately to progress your background investigation.

The online application is applicant driven.  Please ensure that you have entered the best phone number and email addresses for yourself and your references.

Family members can't be references. 

After the applicant enters all required information, a review page appears where the applicant can edit all information entered into the application prior to final submission.

An INITIAL APPLICANT will be able to print out their fingerprint form at the end of the application, and are directed to do so.

The applicant should also print both the confirmation page and application at the end of the process.  This is for quick reference in the event of an issue.

Firearms Fee Schedule

Applications for Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (STS-033): Cash (exact change) or Check/Money Order payable to the "Ewing Police Department" in the amount of $50.00.

Applications to Purchase a Handgun (STS-033): Cash (exact change) or Check/Money Order payable to the "Ewing Police Department" in the amount of $25.00 per handgun permit.

Application for a Duplicate Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (STS-033): There is NO fee.

 

New Jersey Gun Control Laws

 

Code Section: 2C:39-1, et seq.; 2C:58-1, et seq.

Illegal Arms: Sawed-off shotgun, silencer; imitation firearm (intended for unlawful use); defaced firearms; armor penetrating bullets; stun guns; machine guns or assault firearms if unlicensed

Who May Not Own:

  1. Convicted of aggravated assault, arson, burglary, escape, extortion, homicide, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated sexual assault, or sexual assault or any order prohibiting possession of firearms;
  2. Committed for mental disorder unless satisfactory proof he no longer suffers from a disorder which interferes or handicaps him in handling a firearm;
  3. Convicted of unlawful use, possession, or sale of controlled dangerous substance;
  4. Minors under 18;
  5. Drug dependent;
  6. Physical defect which makes it unsafe for him to handle firearms
