The function of the Community Relations Unit is to work hand in hand with the community and its many resources to improve the quality of life in the township. The unit meets with community groups, civic associations and concerned citizens and listens to their concerns, questions and comments on the many happenings throughout our town. The unit is also the liaison between the area colleges and the homes rented by their students within our community.  The unit is responsible for handling the anonymous tips that are received and takes a proactive approach to combat these quality of life complaints.  Some of the community programs that the unit organizes and participates in are listed below.

Citizens Police Academy -  The goal of the citizens academy is to form positive partnerships between the citizens of our community and the police department. The Citizens Academy is open to all Ewing residents, ages 18 and older, and will be held at the Ewing Police Department. The Citizens Police Academy application is available here for download.

Neighborhood Watch - Neighborhood Watch is one of the oldest and best-known crime prevention concepts in North America. In the late 1960s, an increase in crime heightened the need for a crime prevention initiative focused on residential areas and involving local citizens. A Neighborhood Watch program empowers citizens to become active in community crime prevention efforts through participation in Neighborhood Watch groups. These well organized groups of concerned citizens assist the police in their duties by effectively becoming the eyes and ears of the community. National Night Out is a unique crime/drug prevention event held annually the first Tuesday night in August. National Night Out originally started as an event where you would turn on your front porch light and sit outside to prevent crime. Today it has evolved into block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies, and meetings nationwide.  In 2014 more than 35.4 million people in 11,320 communities participated in National Night Out.

College Liaison – Our community is host to many college attendees from both the College of New Jersey and Rider University. Our close proximity to both institutions allows for many rental property choices (homes and apartments) for these attendees. Our Community Relations Unit works with both students and faculty from both institutions to address all “off campus” student housing and student safety issues. Being “good neighbors” is the main focus of our unit’s efforts.  Please feel free to email us with any problems or concerns.
