Firearms Permits and Registration
The Ewing Police Department Firearms Unit assists residents with the application, processing, and registration of firearms.
All firearms applications must be completed through the links provided by the New Jersey State Police Firearms Investigation Unit of the Firearms Application and Registration System (FARS), in coordination with your local (Ewing Township) Police Department . Step 1: READ ALL STEPS FIRST
Step 2: PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE AT THE TIME OF YOUR REQUEST IN ORDER FOR YOUR PERMIT APPLICATION TO BE PROCESSED!
Step 3: When filling out the form, you must enter the Ewing Police Department’s ORI#: NJ0110200. Applicants using this ORI # MUST live in Ewing, New Jersey.

Step 4: When deciding how many permits you would like to get, remember the following:
- ONE permit is required for each handgun you wish to purchase.
- First time gun buyers must get a Firearms Purchaser ID Card.
- You can purchase one (1) handgun in a 30-day period.
- Permits are good for up to 180 days (with renewal after 90 days).
- If you decide you want another handgun permit and you didn't initially get more than one, you will need to apply again.
STEP 5: Save the application confirmation number to enter in the payment reference field when completing the payment process.
Step 6: Once you have read and understood the directions above you can fill out the online application form. Be sure to check all relevant boxes for the items you are applying for. Enter your “Official Name” when completing the application. You cannot utilize simplified versions of your name (Example: Joe vs. Joseph).
A representative of the Ewing Police Department will contact you with the results of your application. You will also be contacted when your permits and relevant paperwork is ready for pick-up.
If we don't receive your fingerprints within 90 days, your application will be withdrawn and you will have to reapply.

Step 3: Requirements
- SBI Number
Applicants must be fingerprinted for a firearms application in New Jersey. After an applicant is fingerprinted for a firearms application, a SBI number is assigned to the applicant which will allow them to apply for the permit. - Before applying for a Concealed Carry Permit, if you have never been fingerprinted for a firearm application in New Jersey before, and you are a New Jersey resident or dual resident, start with an application for an Initial Firearms I.D. card here.
- If you are an Out of state resident that has never been fingerprinted for a firearm application in New Jersey before, please email firearmsinvestunit@njsp.gov for further directions.
- Upload of recent photo (on a light background including head and shoulders).
- One (1) training record completed within the past two (2) years with instructor name and qualification date.
- Personal information: Social Security Number and Driver's License Number.
- Background information.
- Contact information for four (4) non-family related references.
- Information on the handgun to be carried.
- If you have lived outside of the state of New Jersey in the last ten (10) years, please fill out form SP-066 (Consent for Mental Health Records) and upload it to your application.
Step 4 - Once you have read and understood the directions above you may use the online application form for both the initial and renewal application.
Renewals
Approved applications are due for renewal every two (2) years. Renewal applications can be submitted up to four (4) months before the expiration date.
Application Guidelines
- You will be receiving automated email updates throughout the online process.
- Please advise your personal references that the FARS system will email them the reference questions to be answered. Please advise them to complete the questions immediately to progress your background investigation.
- The online application is applicant driven. Please ensure that you have entered the best phone number and email addresses for yourself and your references.
- Family members can't be references.
- After the applicant enters all required information, a review page appears where the applicant can edit all information entered into the application prior to final submission.
- An INITIAL APPLICANT will be able to print out their fingerprint form at the end of the application, and are directed to do so.
- The applicant should also print both the confirmation page and application at the end of the process. This is for quick reference in the event of an issue.

New Jersey Gun Control Laws
Code Section: 2C:39-1, et seq.; 2C:58-1, et seq.
Illegal Arms: Sawed-off shotgun, silencer; imitation firearm (intended for unlawful use); defaced firearms; armor penetrating bullets; stun guns; machine guns or assault firearms if unlicensed
Who May Not Own:
- Convicted of aggravated assault, arson, burglary, escape, extortion, homicide, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated sexual assault, or sexual assault or any order prohibiting possession of firearms;
- Committed for mental disorder unless satisfactory proof he no longer suffers from a disorder which interferes or handicaps him in handling a firearm;
- Convicted of unlawful use, possession, or sale of controlled dangerous substance;
- Minors under 18;
- Drug dependent;
- Physical defect which makes it unsafe for him to handle firearms
